U.S. Citizens Roadmap

1. Take a Discovery Flight

Around 60mins introductory flight where CFI takes you up and let you handle the controls, cost about $150-$250, tells you if flying is really for you.

2. Get An Aviation Medical Certificate

Find an FAA Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) at faa.gov and schedule a Third Class medical exam, cost roughly $100-$200, confirms you’re medically qualified.

3. Choose a Flight School & CFI

Decide between Part 61 or Part 141 program. Visit in person, talk to current students, do a trial lesson with the CFI you’d be training.

4. Plan Your Finances

Flight Training = Big Investment, PPL alone averages $12-18K. That’s just the beginning. Think thoroughly in building a realistic budget, avoid running out of money midway — one of the most common reasons pilots quit.

5. Apply for Student Pilot Certificate

Free and done online at iacra.faa.gov. Your CFI will co-sign it digitally, about 30mins. You/ll receive a temporary certificate immediately.

STEP 3: Choose a Flight School

3.1 SEVP-certified

International students training full-time at a U.S. flight school need an M-1/F-1 visa, involving the issuance of an I-20 form from a SEVP-certified flight school.

3.2 English Proficiency

The FAA requires all pilots to be able to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently. For non-native speakers, you may need to provide documentation. E.g. (IELTS, TOEFL).

Proof of Funds

Before getting acceptance by most flight schools, you must prove you have the financial means to cover your entire training program — tuition, housing, living expenses.

Housing

Schools often ask how you plan to live while in the U.S. — near-airport housing options are often available through or recommended by the school.

The pilot journey has a lot of phases — and at every one, there are questions and sticking points that nobody prepares you for. This roadmap gives you a clearer view of what's ahead, so you can move forward with direction instead of doubt.
